With this being the last Blog of the semester, I thought we would do something fun!

Write a letter to Santa Clause and tell him if you've been naughty or nice. Also include a list of what you want for Christmas. Finally, tell the rest of your classmates where you will be going to celebrate the Christmas Holiday and what you have been blessed with this year! New Year's Resolutions anyone?! Newsreel (Blog #16)

Directly above this weeks Blog is a new widget I placed on our Blog page. It is called a newsreel. This newsreel searches the web for stories pertaining to the topic of your choosing. I chose to search for Government, Republic and Federal Government.

Economic Influence (Blog #14)

The most effective power the national government has over the state is through economic means. The fact that taxes are collected by the national government and a portion are set aside for the states means the national government can use this to their advantage.

2). Why would states want few restrictions on federal aid?

Federalism (Blog #12)

Ch. 4 explains that federalism is a very important principle contained within our constitution. The fact that some of the power is divided between the national government and the state governments helps to maintain some local control.

1)  Explain why you believe Federalism is important. Then differentiate between a loose verse strict interpretation of the constitution. Where would you land if you were interpreting the constitution.

Challenges for America's Constitutional Democracy in the 21st Century (Blog #11)

 

1).  A).  How would you explain federalism and why do you think many countries have adopted variations of the American model of federalism?
B).  What are the major advantages of federalism?  Disadvantages?
C).  In Federalist 51, James Madison argued that the division of power between "two distinct governments" would allow state and federal governments to check each other, providing security to the "rights of the people."  Has history proven him right?  What evidence can you offer to support your answer?

2).  A).  The Bill of Rights has been called "the single greatest contribution of American constitutionalism to the world."  Is it deserving of such high praise?  What evidence can you offer to support your answer?

1).  A).  How do the Fifth and Sixth Amendments protect the rights of criminal defendants?
B).  What is the relationship between the right of trial by jury to the natural rights philosophy and to the principle of limited government?
C).  One of the rights guaranteed in the Sixth Amendment is the right to a public trial in all criminal proceedings.  What purposes are served by public trials?

2).  A).  The First Amendment with its protection of freedom of speech and press has been described as being "at the heart of American democracy."  Do you agree or disagree with that description?  Why or why not?
B).  Why is the right to freedom of expression important to the individual and to the society as a whole?

The Constitution has been changed to further the ideals contained in the Declaration of Independence.  The question to you is how has it changed and in what specific ways has it changed?
